So one interesting fact is this was originally deemed a national monument in 1933 but just last December 2019 it was redesignated a national park!
It is the world’s largest gypsum (that mineral that makes it white) dune field.
The dunes were formed after the evaporation of an ancient sea.
Water beneath the surface keeps the dunes (mostly) in place. It does blow over and onto the roads and has to be plowed. It looks just like snow!!
The feel of it is different from typical sand – it does not stick to you as much and it’s a little easier to walk on – especially the areas you can tell it’s packed down beause of moisture beneath.
