Here’s the shocker – we have no set curriculum. What?! That’s right, if there’s one thing I’ve learned after 15 years of homeschooling it’s we get undoubtedly disappointed (and the kids get stressed) when our plans are not fulfilled…especially with homeschool curriculum. However when we let learning take its course and give kids (of all ages) the freedom and opportunities to explore what interests them they will REMEMBER it better! Traveling is a great way to stretch our patience, work on our resilience, and increase adaptability. Heaven knows we live in a time we need to be adaptable.
WRITING – whatever they want to write – what they saw that day, what they ate, what they did…..it’s their choice. It’s the habit of daily writing.
READING – whatever interests them. In addition I (still) read aloud to them and am about to start The Hobbit.
MATH is the other consistent subject. Video Textbooks is our go-to.
SCIENCE & HISTORY – what we will be living near, exploring, and discovering (the ocean, the Redwoods, monuments, etc.) over the next year will cover these subjects without too much effort or imagination. (Google will be a great resource to clarify and find interesting facts about where we are and what we’re seeing.)
ONLINE classes – they each have a couple online courses and this is already causing some stress (depending on Wifi!). They are at an age that online classes are not really optional – and they like them. We will continue them (and continue to look for good wifi:-)
EXTRAS – we brought a keyboard, guitar, and ukulele for MUSIC practice. We have sketch books for ART, camera for PHOTOGRAPHY, and recipe books for COOKING and BAKING. Also toting along with us are two rubbermaids with paracord bracelet supplies and basket weaving materials.
The many faces, and places, of ROADschool.
