One Big Field Trip

Redwoods

A state park or national park?

Both.

The Redwoods are comprised of a National park AND 5 nearby state parks: Del Norte Coast, Jedidiah Smith, Prairie Creek, Humboldt, and Redwoods State Park. In 1994 the National Park service and the state of California park service joined forces to care for the park together. It’s a win-win for a visitor because one pass (state or national) will get you into all the areas. It covers 139,000 acres accumulative.

FUN FACTS:

~Redwood park is in both Tsunami and Earthquake Country.

~Coast Redwoods are the tallest of all Redwoods – up to 379ft!

~The size seeds these trees start from are the size of a tomato seed!

~Jurassic Park Lost World was filmed in Fern Canyon.

Fern Canyon was our favorite – it was just so unique and had such a mystical feel with the walls of the canyon being completely covered in lush green ferns. (It was quite a bumpy, windy road to get to but worth it in the end!)

“There are values in our landscape that ought to be sustained against destruction though their worth cannot be expressed in money terns. This nation of ours is not so rich it can afford to lose them; it is still rich enough to afford to preserve them.” – Newton B. Drury
