One Big Field Trip

Nature’s Entertainment along Oregon Coast

(1 min video below)

We stayed two nights at Chinook Bend a few miles East of Lincoln City.

It was on a river, in a valley, and both mornings were misty and drew me into the woods to walk and explore. There I found dew-covered spider webs which of course reminded me of our family favorite poem, “Spider Webs” by James S. Tippett.

The Spiders were busy last night from every fence and tree
They hung their lacey webs for all the world to see
The mist was busy too, in the stillness of the night,
They strung the spider webs with pearls to catch the morning light.

One spider wove a web like frost on a window pane
Another spun a single thread that looked like a jeweled chain
Motionless hung the webs, by the quiet moonbeams kissed
A fairy world was made last night, by the spiders and the mist.

Devil’s Punchbowl between Depoe Bay and Newport was a perfect spot to lay on the sand and watch the girls (and Bob) try out skim boarding. It’s harder than it looks! Sophie biffed it and is still recovering after almost two weeks. We had been already visited the beach several times but this was our first time relaxing and enjoying the ocean breeze and warm white sand.

The girls found a painted rock that they’re still planning to rehide. Fun surprise!

Sand Dunes on Yaqina bay and barking Sea Lions in Newport. The sea lions were hilarious – sunning on the floating docks, playing King of the Raft was pure entertainment. We learned that only the male California sea lions migrate up to the Oregon coast from California while the females stay in California. They travel north the end of August and return sometime between April and June for mating.
