One Big Field Trip

Kartchner Caverns & Tombstone

This was a great spot – camping at the Kartchner Caverns state park and visiting the town of Tombstone (30 min SE).

Of course we took the two main hikes near the caverns but unfortunately did not get a cavern tour due to their reduced tours and size (thanks COVID).

One of my favorite memories will be how we all got on top of the roof of the trailer to star gaze. Kartchner Caverns is known to be a “dark sky park” so the sky was full of stars! Mars was brilliant in the Eastern sky as well as Jupiter to the south of it. Bob and Marin saw like a dozen shooting stars before I caught a glimpse of one.

The morning we left Marin and I took a 4 mile hike together. The first half was in a canyon and we knew there could be mountain lions so we were a little on edge….but then the second half opened up to beautiful views (pics below) and we were blessed with cloud cover that kept us quite comfortable.

TOMBSTONE

I knew this would be touristy – and it was, but it was a fun break from all our hiking and looking at trees, rocks, and plants. 🙂

We watched a little 30 minute “gun fight” comedy, played a round of mini golf, 20 minute bus tour of town, visited Boot hill cemetary where they say many men died with their boots still on. We were told by a local to eat at “Big Nose Kate’s Saloon” where the waiters were dressed in period clothing and there was live country music! It was a fun atmosphere with yummy food. (Bob even had to take a picture of their clever urinals – below.)
