This fort was built in 1863 during the American Civil War in case the English sided with the Confederates and attacked through Canada on the Pacific Northwest / Columbia River. It was fired upon only once in 1942 by the Japanese but they did not return fire. It was shut down in 1947.

Our girls got to learn other meanings for “battery” (a fortified emplacement for heavy guns) and “magazine” (a chamber for holding a supply of cartridges to be fed automatically to the breech of a gun) in regards to military.





These teens loved exploring especially the dark tunnels in Battery Clark where the ammunition was stored. It was a really cool place!
