One Big Field Trip

Crater Lake National Park

Beautiful clear blue Crater Lake is 83% filled due to snow and rain, giving it the clear blue water.

It is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,949 feet.

It is the southern most volcano in the Cascade range.

Crater Lake was called Mt Mazuma and erupted around 7,000 years ago.

On average 42 feet of snow falls each year.

Bob was a genius and found a day use parking lot just 10 minutes out of the park (near Diamond Lake) so we could unhook the trailer and drive through the park without hauling it. A lot of these parks are not super conducive to hauling anything behind you as the roads are narrow and often near steep cliffs.

We drove around the entire rim which was awesome since last time we visited (in 2016) the East Rim was completely closed off for maintenance (and is only open from June – Sep because of snow). Now we can saw we’ve seen the lake (and Wizard Island) from all possible views. We only spent 2 hours in the park but it was perfect – several quick outlook stops and a quick 1 mile hike at Sun Notch (which gives a great view of the Phantom Ship).
