One Big Field Trip

Chiricahua Mountains & National Monument

(1 min video below)

This area is amazing! I’m not sure if it’s because we didn’t know what to expect or because it’s far off the beaten trail and by the time we got there we would think anything is amazing…but really it’s so beautiful!

We stayed two nights on BLM land in the Indian Bread Rocks Recreation area. This is just 15 minutes south of Bowie, Arizona off I-10. This place alone was interesting and enough for us to explore and enjoy the view but as always, we had more planned.

CHIRICAHUA NATIONAL MONUMENT

Chiricahua (cheery-caw-wah) means wild turkey. It was given its name by Apache Indians that lived in the area because of the many wild turkeys that roamed this area (until the mid 1900s). The Apache Indians’ chiefs were Cochise and Geronimo, popular names we’ve heard in history.

The rocks formed from lava flows that hardened into rock called ryholite. After years of erosion they developed into columns, balanced rocks, and pinnacles (the sharp pointy ones).
