We stayed the night in Wells, NV at a very cute campground that had a lot of trees in the middle of a fairly barren Nevada. After setting up and stretching we went on a Ladybug (rock) hunt.
Driving the long stretch of 80 made us excited to stop at the Bonneville Salt Flats even though it’s technically a barren area of, that’s right, SALT.
Salt Flats Fun Facts:
~This area used to be a large lake – Bonneville Lake. It is thought to once have been the size of Lake Michigan.
~As water continued to evaporate, salt deposits were left in many areas. The Great Salt Lake is a remnant of Lake Bonneville.
~The salt surface contains potassium, magnesium lithium and sodium chloride (common table salt) – and yes a couple of us may have taste-tested it.
~On hot days, heat waves rise from the salty soil and create mirages that look amazingly real. If you believe your eyes, the dry desert looks like it is covered by water.
