One Big Field Trip

Fort Davis, Texas

Our plans changed. For the better. Originally our schedule had us staying near Hueco Tanks state park and visiting the Guadalupe mountain national park but with no internet and water (we found out) we made the decision to abandon that idea and head south. I’m not sure what brought us to Fort Davis, but it was a good choice. A very small town with a national historic site – our kind of place! Our campground was no thrills and not a blade of grass – but beautiful sunrises and sunsets against the jagged desert rock provided the beauty our souls longed for.

The town drugstore was my favorite – and we ate TWO meals there during our stay. A cute little caboose with yummy ice cream was stationed right across from the Fort. Bob and I went on a two-part date – in the morning to the Fort Davis state park down the road for a 2 mile hike with an outstanding 360* view) and then in the late afternnon to an art (photography) gallery, out to eat, and a walk around the cute town.

The historic fort was amazing in and of itself – it was in operation from 1867-1891 and mostly was there to protect mail traveling from San Antonio to El Paso and California. It was a stunning setting and if I’d lived at that time and had to do that work I wouldn’t have minded that fort. They even had a state of the art hospital – meaning the government made sure they had all things necessary (supplies you normally wouldn’t have seen in the “wild west”).

The COOLEST thing was we were there on VETERAN’S DAY!!! What are teh odds!? I love when these moments happen – again, this was not a planned stop!

Bob even ran into and recognized Allen West! He is a well known conservative politcal commentator and retired army lietenant.
